Wynn's Rainbow Dash costume

We really had to trim and style that wig ... but she'll be able to use it even when she's a grown-up if she wants!

Helps that her school uniform is light blue too - it's a cold night so she's got two shirts, pants and tights, thick socks and gloves.  The wig will keep her pretty warm, too!

Ann walked her around the neighborhood this year - appropriately dressed, don't you think?

Great haul this year!

Making Wynn's Halloween costume

She'll have two costumes this year: for the Yinghua Character Parade, her uncle got her Hogwarts robes (photos of that later) so she can be Hermione.  For trick-or-treating, she wants to be Rainbow Dash.

I researched on the Net and YouTube to learn how to make pegasus wings and pony ears ... the wig and tail I found on eBay and are coming from China...  I got a hot-glue gun and foam craft sheets - here we go:

Wire coat hanger inside the wings for rigidity (completely glued in between the foam sheets.) I used two stretchy headbands for her arms to go through.
I think she likes them!

Pumpkin Carving 2013

Instead of just cutting a hole at the top of the pumpkin this year, we decided to try going in from different directions - we did one from the bottom, one from the side, and one with almost half the top taken off...
These were all from our own garden, too. We grew "pie pumpkins" instead of the "jack-o-lantern" variety & we thought it was a lot easier to cut, scoop, and clean them this time.

I saved a set of seeds to plant next year - and a much larger clump to dry and roast for snacking this Fall!

Halloween Costume Parade!

Every Halloween, Yinghua Academy celebrates the holiday with a "literary character costume parade." Kids may dress up - but need to bring the book with the character they're portraying.

Wynn came as Pippi Longstockings - she fell in love with the character after seeing her in a play at the Children's Theater earlier this year!

Totally digging that NASA spacesuit...

Happy Hallo-wynn!

Yesterday we carved some of the pumpkins Wynn grew this summer into spooky jack-o-lanterns!  Orange lights on our front porch and the full moon rising up over the house make for a haunting scene!
The pumpkin on the right got chewed up somewhat by squirrels, so we incorporated the "scars" into its face for extra scariness!

Halloween, and Getting Over the Flu

What did Wynn want to be this year? "A GECKO!!" So Ann made her a tail to go with her green pants and shirt. She found a green hoodie at Old Navy and was planning to sew big eyes on the hood.

"No, Mom. I don't need extra eyes. I use my own eyes."

Wynn was so excited to go trick-or-treating this year.
It took soooo long to finally get dark.

Carrying her rubber gecko around to make sure everyone
knew what the costume was supposed to be.

She and Ann were out about 20 minutes and came home with her pail full of goodies. Happy, and ready to call it a night.

I manned the home front and gave out generous portions of Skittles to the neighborhood kids while trying not to cough on them.

The flu bug held strong in my body through Thursday morning, when I woke up with a 101.7 temperature. I doubled down on Advil and Tylenol and took a long, cool shower, kept the car windows cracked open taking Wynn to daycare, and drank lots of hot coffee. (That old Chinese saying about fighting fever with heat started making sense...) By 10:00 my temp was back down to normal, although it started creeping back up into the 99s by evening.

Friday I woke up for the first time without any fever, though plenty tired and with a very upset digestive tract and very sore throat. Felt much better on Saturday although had to stop and sit or lie down every couple hours; less coughing than previous days. Actually managed to do some yard work Sunday (albeit more hands-and-knees work than full-blown leaf raking.)

Went to work today, and even though I mostly just went through the 400 emails waiting from last week, ran a few reports, and had catch-up conversations with my boss and coworkers, I came home utterly exhausted. But glad to be back in the land of the living.

Elmo = Rock Star

We went to the Zoo Boo at Como Park last night. Wow. It was ridiculously crowded. We trudged about a mile and a half from our parking place to the zoo entrance, got yelled at by a guy who accused us of cutting in line (No, Sir, we didn't.), and then stood like good little sheep in a crowd of people for the next hour or so. It was so crowded that we couldn't really appreciate any of the decorations or interact with the people in costume. At one point I said to Scott, "This really reminds of the Beijing airport." That is not a compliment, by the way.

The spookiest part of the Zoo Boo was the way the other kids reacted to Wynn's Elmo costume. They'd wander over to us with these zombie-like expressions on their faces, saying, "El-mo. El-mo." Very Night of the Living Dead. They all wanted to touch her, so she got pet on the head and the hands by a bunch of kids she didn't know, which was not to her liking at all. Two little twin brothers went so far as to take turns punching her as she sat in her stroller. Their mom was sufficiently mortified and apologetic, but, still. While I LOVE being a parent, I'm finding that I don't often enjoy being one in the company of a bunch of other parents and their children.

The best part of this weekend was raking leaves out in the backyard. Wynn, Scott, and I each had our own rake. Her way of helping involved taking leaves out of the pile and putting them on the green moss next to it, but we appreciate her desire to help out. Last year she was a little too little for jumping in the leaves, so I gladly gave her a tutorial on the finer points; she got the hang of it right away.   :-)

When last we blogged, it was the day Ranger passed away, and Wynn still hadn't figured out what happened. About two days after, she and I were on the porch looking at some flowers friends had sent. I told her that they had sent flowers because they knew Mom was sad. When I asked her if she knew why, she pressed her little cheek against mine and whispered, "Ranger gone." No tears, but the beginnings of understanding.

The next night she woke up at midnight screaming. Scott can usually calm her down just by going in her room and hugging her, but she was beyond that. I realized that she was calling out, "Mom!" and "Ranger!" I went to her room, and we all sat together and hugged and talked about how Mom and Baba don't leave. It was heartbreaking for us to hear her grieving cry again; it was just as it sounded that first night in Nanning, filled with the profound sadness that comes from losing someone you love. We've had a few moments of separation anxiety since - that I had three nights of conferences and wasn't getting home before her bedtime didn't help. We've moved on to talking about getting another Sheltie, but realize that we need to give it time.
